Delta employees will travel to Guangzhou, China, next spring to build six new homes with low-income families in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. As a SkyMiles member, you are invited to bid on this trip for you and a guest to participate, along with 50 Delta employees from around the world, two Delta retirees and 16 employees from Delta's partner carrier, China Eastern.

You and your guest will join Delta's Global Build team in Guangzhou, China, from March 30 - April 9, 2018. The trip includes 11 days: three days for travel, five days dedicated to Habitat construction and the remaining days filled with cultural experiences in Guangzhou. Prior to the event, participants will attend an orientation at the Delta Flight Museum, located at Delta's World Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 8.

The package includes:
  • Air Transportation: Roundtrip, First Class travel for two (2) people from the Delta airport in the United States closest to your residence (First Class travel may not be available on all domestic segments) will be provided for travel to Guangzhou and to Atlanta for orientation
  • Ground Transportation: All ground transportation will be provided in Guangzhou and Atlanta
  • Hotel Accommodations: Hotel accommodations for 9 nights in Guangzhou (alcoholic beverages and incidental charges not included) as well as up to two nights in Atlanta for orientation if needed
  • Meals: All meals and non-alcoholic beverages while in Guangzhou and Atlanta.
This trip will mark the 15th Delta Global Build. The time you spend building will be supplemented with opportunities to get to know the Habitat homeowners, the local community and Delta employees. We will be working on six homes in Sancun, a small community northeast of Guangzhou. Daily tasks will include excavation, mixing mortar, brick moving and bricklaying. All are physical activities, so you must be in general good health, though no prior construction skills are necessary. The project will also include the opportunity to experience tours, shopping and cultural events in the Guangzhou area, including 360-degree views of Guangzhou from atop the Canton Tower. Once the bidding has closed, the successful bidder will be provided with a detailed itinerary and handbook for the trip.

Your time spent building with future Habitat homeowners and other volunteers changes the lives of those in need of decent shelter, but will change your life as well!

About Habitat for Humanity

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in nearly 1,400 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.

Things To Know Before You Bid

This is a working trip, involving physical activities under what may be regarded as a difficult environment. Please read all terms and conditions and consider carefully before bidding.

Delta Customers are eligible to participate in only one (1) Delta Global Build each, so the winning bidder would not be able to participate in a future Delta Global Build.

Screening Conversation - After the bidding has ended, the potential successful bidder will be contacted by a Delta representative to discuss the project and ensure that all parties involved understand the purpose and nature of the trip. Topics of conversation may include, but are not limited to:
  • International travel experience in developing countries
  • Familiarity and/or work with Habitat for Humanity
  • Reasons for wanting to participate
  • Comfort with group travel and adhering to a pre-determined itinerary
  • Awareness that Delta employees are part of the team and that media and press will likely be included in this experience
Following the screening process, Delta may determine, in its sole discretion, to award the trip to an alternate bidder. Under such circumstances, any miles bid will be refunded to the account of the bidder whose bid is declined.

Additional Information

Accommodations - The team will be staying at the Hilton Guangzhou Baiyun. The hotel offers a variety of dining options, a fitness center, spa, pool and high-speed internet service. The Hilton has been booked for the Delta group with comfort and safety in mind. Changing hotels for any reason upon check-in will not be possible as it is important the group stays together for the entirety of the trip. Fees for certain facilities/services may apply.

Age Requirement - The successful bidder and companion must be 18 or older to participate in the trip to Guangzhou.

Application Process - The successful bidder will be required to complete the standard Habitat for Humanity volunteer application and standard Delta participation waiver.

Climate - Despite being located just south of the Tropic of Cancer, Guangzhou has a humid subtropical climate influenced by the East Asian monsoon. Summers are wet with high temperatures, high humidity, and a high heat index. Winters are mild and comparatively dry. Guangzhou has a lengthy monsoon season, spanning from April through September. Monthly averages range from 13.6 °C (56.5 °F) in January to 28.6 °C (83.5 °F) in July, while the annual mean is 22.6 °C (72.7 °F). Autumn, from October to December, is very moderate, cool and windy, and is the best travel time. The relative humidity is approximately 68 percent, whereas annual rainfall in the metropolitan area is over 1,700 mm (67 in). With monthly percent possible sunshine ranging from 17% in March and April to 52% in November, the city receives 1,628 hours of bright sunshine annually, considerably less than nearby Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Dietary Needs - While in Guangzhou, the Delta Global Build team will dine at a variety of restaurants that aim to cater to all tastes. Throughout the trip, meals will be provided to the team. For those with special dietary requirements, every effort will be made to meet those needs, but special meals are not guaranteed. While on the trip, participants will be advised to drink bottled water, which will be available at the work site and at the hotel.

Immunization and Health Reminders - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that travelers to China take precautions to protect their health and safety. Travelers who are immunocompromised or who have medical needs should not make this trip. Please visit the CDC's website at www.cdc.gov as all vaccinations and health-related issues are the sole responsibility of the participant.

Medical Insurance - Medical insurance is included in the package. This mandatory insurance coverage is consistent with policies recommended by Habitat for Humanity's legal department and ratified by the Habitat for Humanity board of directors. Coverage ensures a comprehensive risk management program and provides protection for all of Habitat's short-term mission volunteers, including participants in this event. First Aid will be available on the work site at all times.

Passports - All volunteers must travel with their passports. For entry into China, all passports must be valid for at least six months after the date of return to the U.S. The winning bidder will need to bring a color copy of his/her passport and a color copy of the passport of the accompanying guest on the trip to the orientation session on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at the Delta Flight Museum. Delta's Corporate Security team will use these passport copies to expedite tourist card processing.

Transportation in Guangzhou - All applicants should be aware that Guangzhou is a very congested area and traffic delays can and should be expected. Although every measure has been taken to provide comfortable transportation with modern and dependable buses, significant time will be spent en route to various locations during the trip. Also, combined travel time to the build site each day will span approx. 4 hours. Please consider these facts when bidding. Potential participants should be aware that significant travel may cause motion or car sickness during transport to the build locations.

Visas - A Chinese Visa is required to participate. Participants are responsible for securing and payment of visa (approx. $220 for a 10-year tourist visa). Additional visa information will be provided to participants.
